Monday, 6/1:
"HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT"
-
When Brody was facing the barrel of Ex-Hippy Poppa Brennan's gun
this week, why didn't he think to say, "Excuse me, but I am a member
of the United States Military and a veteran of the Iraq War?" I bet
Mr. Brennan would have dropped that gun.
- The
Blair/Starr mother-daughter bonding scenes are delightful, as usual.
- I love that
the writers chose to have Cole get upset and feel his sobriety was
threatened by the news of Hope being alive. I thought that was very
insightful. However, I did not feel that Brandon Buddy and Daphnee
Duplaix (Rachel) really pulled off their scenes.
- In fact, I
am experiencing a strange disconnect from NuRachel. There is
something just not registering. I don't think it's the casting so
much as the writing. She returned, had an argument with Nora, and is
now on the sidelines. Why bring her back at all if there is no
story for her? I don't consider hiring a love interest to be a
storyline. When characters return, it should be for a reason.
- I'm also
feeling disconnected from Cole/Brandon Buddy. I feel like this actor
and character put me on a roller coaster of love and
indifference. He's had moments of awesome emotional connection to
the material, but all too often I feel like he's just reciting his
lines and waiting for the next sweeps period to remind the audience
that he is an actor. At least I can understand what he's saying
these days - that is a huge accomplishment after his earlier days of
marble-mouthed mumbling. But there is a troubling disconnect
happening. Since Buddy has shown his ability to deeply embody Cole's
emotions, it's jarring when he's not emotionally connected. And
lately, that's most of the time. So... I have to call out Brandon
Buddy....Brandon, a couple years ago I got on your case pretty badly
about your diction. Congratulations - you've really improved that
(but keep working). Now it's time to step up to the next level as an
actor. You've proven yourself, but now you have to "bring it" every
single day. That means infusing the day-to-day material with some of
the "stuff" you've shown us when the storylines climax. You can't
wait for the writing to take you there - you have to bring it to
the writing. That probably means spending more time with your
scripts for awhile, or perhaps working with a coach or taking a new
class. Don't stop growing, because the potential is there. You have
more screen time than Erika Slezak, so you need to respect that and
earn that. I believe you can do it.
- Nash's
parents are a couple of idiots. Jeesh.
- Still
confused about Starr and Blair living at La Boulaie.
- Who stole
Stacy's blood? I can't believe I am even asking this question. I
think Roxy has it.
- Stacy is
probably the worst liar I have ever seen - meaning, it's SO obvious
she is lying. Yet Rex believes her every word. So I have to
reiterate that Rex is a freaking moron.
- Hmmm, okay
this is probably going to shock some people, but I have something
positive to say about Gigi. And that is... there is something
refreshing and slightly intriguing about Gigi and Schuyler
together. I would be perfectly content without either of them,
really. But, their scenes this week sure beat out the Rex/Stacy
scenes. Scott Clifton and Farah Fath look good together too. And it
is VERY strange that Scott Clifton and John-Paul Lavoisier seem to
have a lot of the exact same mannerisms and line deliveries. Is it
possible Schuyler will turn out to be Rex's twin brother? I wouldn't
be too surprised, though I'd prefer him linked to Todd.
- Am I the
only one rolling his eyes at Michael McBain? This man dumped his
wife because she wanted Starr's baby. And now he's practically
shaking her and demanding she be more excited about the baby being
alive. What the... ?
TUESDAY, 6/2:
"MOTHER KNOWS BESS"
- How did
Viki and Clint get to the Brennans' house just an hour after Brody?
Do Nash's parents seriously live this close to Llanview, yet STILL
they had no idea he had died? If they were that disconnected from
Nash, I doubt they would be quite this enthralled with meeting their
grandchild.
- I was also confused that Nash's parents are named Brennan. Why
is Nash's last name Brennan, then? Shouldn't he have the last name
of the people who actually raised him? Did I miss something here?
- I can't
believe Dorian is the ONLY person mad at Jessica! I think everyone
is being way too easy on Jessica! Dorian is justified in her anger!
- The
Rachel/Cole scenes really bored me today. I felt like Daphnee
Duplaix was trying too hard, and Brandon Buddy wasn't trying hard
enough.
- If there
was an Amber Alert out on Hope, wouldn't the FBI be involved in the
stake out? What jurisdiction does Bo have in this situation? None,
right? Confused again.
- Did you see
Brody just rip part of the Brennans' staircase off when he went up
the stairs? LOL.
- I just
loved, loved, loved how Viki took charge of the situation with
Jessica. This is the Viki I know and love.
- All of the
Cole/Markko scenes and Starr/Langston scenes were B-O-R-I-N-G
today! Too much talking and not enough action. "Wah, wah, wah,
what should I do?" I don't know, but DO something please,
and stop whining!
- I thought
Viki was going to pretend to be Niki Smith, but Jean was an even
bigger treat! Viki's plan to entice Jessica back out was genius. It's so good to see Viki thinking and acting for herself rather than
dishing out advice. Heck, it's nice to see Viki out of her kitchen!
- Isn't it
gross that Nora has bedded two sets of brothers? Bo/Clint, and
RJ/Hank. Maybe Daniel Coulson and Sam Rappaport are long-lost
brothers, too?
- Why would
Bess believe that Jean Randolph was out? She knows Viki is
integrated and she knows Viki well enough to be suspicious of this
sudden Jean appearance.
- I'm so
thankful to the writers that Viki is the one bringing Jessica back,
and not Brody. That would have smacked of gimmickry.
WEDNESDAY,
6/3: "ARE YOU THE GATEKEEPER?"
- Gigi and
Marcie "feel bad for Jessica?" I just don't think that's an
appropriate response upon hearing that Jessica switched her dead
baby for Starr's live baby. More appropriate responses might
include, "I thought that crazy bitch was integrated," "I guess it
runs in the family," "That smells like a lawsuit to me," and "I
guess that doctor shot herself in the head for nothing."
- In fact,
where the hell is the scene where Schuyler finds out the baby is
alive? Helllooooooo, writers?
- Speaking of
Schuyler, did anyone else not believe him as a bully/physically
aggressive type (when he was torturing Kyle)? I don't think the
writers know what they're doing with Schuyler or with Scott Clifton.
- How AWESOME
was Erika Slezak when she was playing Jean to Bess but still playing
Viki to the camera (and the viewers)? Go ahead and remind everyone
why you are the queen, Ms. Slezak!
- The
Natalie/Clint scenes started off awkwardly and seeming like filler,
but wound up very touching.
- First Gigi
calls Rex's land line to leave an important message, knowing Stacy
lives there. Then she assumes that no one is home because her call
wasn't answered. This whole storyline should be called, "Dumb
asses."
- I think
Brody needs to be developed a lot more. Lately he is just "that
love interest guy."
- YES! I
love that Bess figured out it was Viki and not Jean in the room, and
I loved even more how Viki admitted she was impersonating Jean and
even apologized for it. It's amazing how Viki handled this
situation!
- Stacy stole
20K from Vegas, and spent 10K on Kyle's bail. So... where is the
other 10K? Sitting in a briefcase? Why isn't Stacy doing anything
with it?
- Okay,
here's where I have to admit that today's episode made me cry. I
was not expecting this at all, but let me just go on the record and
say: HOLY SH%*! The scenes in which Viki brought Jessica out were
some of the best scenes in years. This was definitely the best
episode of the year so far. Like I said, NOT expecting that at all
as I've grown weary of Jessica (I think Tess should have stayed out
forever...Jessica is and always will be a boring girl).
- Furthermore, I have to applaud Bree Williamson and say that this
was her best work EVER. Better than Nash's death, even. And that's
because it was the most layered, subtle work she has ever done. When Jessica came out and relived the night of Chloe's death, I was
riveted in a way that I haven't been in a long time. The writing,
the direction, and especially the acting were phenomenal! I'm not
sure if she'll win this year, but Bree Williamson should absolutely
be nominated NEXT year, for this episode. So should Erika Slezak.
- Further
proof that Rex is an idiot: Falling for Stacy's pathetic fake
nightmare. Ugh.
Thursday,
6/4: "THE WAITING IS THE HARDEST PART"
- Why is
there no physical evidence that Cris has moved in to Layla's
apartment? Where is the art? And where is Cris going to paint? He
is moving from a gigantic loft into a cramped apartment that he's
sharing now with TWO others? I mean, I like this idea but there is
no attention to detail and that hurts any story.
- Oh NO. I
thought Moe and Noelle were going to stay AWAY. But I'll tell you
one thing: They proved in just one day being back that they are the
most useless and annoying characters on the show. The way they were
awkwardly inserted into the scenes at La Boulaie where Moe (what
else?) cooked for everyone and Noelle kept blabbing about Marcie
taking Starr's baby (proving she is pea-brained) was just so forced.
- Scott
Clifton was bugging me again today. He brings a lot of "spaz" to
the table.
- It's so
unfortunate that Wes was killed off. Whose STUPID idea was that? There is so much Wes could be playing into right now: The
Brody/Jessica story, the Marty/John story, and he could even be the
answer to Blair's storyline hell.
-
Prediction: Stacy is pregnant with Fish's baby. She will finally
bed Rex in the coming weeks, find out she is pregnant, and pass the
baby off as Rex's. But Fish will be her baby daddy. I think this
really might be where they are going with the story, because a
couple small hints have been dropped (Stacy said, "God forbid" when
Rex asked her if she was pregnant... meaning she may still be
waiting for her period, and the Fish/Stacy fling was brought up in
the Layla/Fish/Cris scenes). Please, writers - let Stacy and Oliver
get married so that Stacy's official name is Stacy Fish.
- There is
something very "Threesome" (the movie) about the Cris/Layla/Fish
situation, and even thought it's SO forced and bizarre that they are
all living together, I have to say there's something about it that I
like. The actors are making it work. I really liked the scene
where Cris dumped his popcorn all over Layla. You could tell the
actors had fun with it. I am interested in this new living
situation. I think Layla will use Fish to make Cris jealous.
- If Layla is so broke, why doesn't she get a JOB? I'm not saying
it's easy to get a job these days, but Layla hasn't worked in
years. Are we supposed to feel sorry for her that she ran out of
her underwear money?
Friday, 6/5:
"RISING FROM THE TUMBLE"
- So, Michael
and Marcie are leaving in like a week, and I'm wondering how they
are going to pack up and leave so quickly? Are they going to just
quit their jobs and leave town?
- Although I want Starr to raise Hope, I honestly do not believe
Cole should share custody. He is NOT ready to be a father!
- Finally, a
Brody/Marty scene. Hmm. I saw something with them, actually. A
spark of something...
- Now that
Jessica is back to being Jessica, she's on my nerves again. That's
the problem with integration.
- Cole
reading poetry to John = awkward.
- John
telling Cole he will "rise from the tumble," too = cheesy.
- Is
Jessica's doctor on call for her 24-hours? No other patients to
take care of?
- Wonderful
Blair/Starr scenes today. It's so telling that Blair was completely
diplomatic with Starr, laying out all of her options without telling
her what to do. You know at heart, Blair wants Starr to keep that
baby. But she won't say that because she wants Starr to make the
right choice for herself and take responsibility for that choice. I
think Blair was a very good mother today.
- Jessica's
final goodbye to the baby got to me again. Darn it! Not only was Bree Williamson great, but Trevor St. John, Kassie DePaivia, Erika
Slezak, and Jerry Ver Dorn were all fabulous (and the director
probably played a hand in that, so props to the director). I
especially appreciated how seriously Todd handled the baby hand-off
and how sympathetic he was to Jessica. Trevor could have played
these scenes flippantly, as he did the earlier scenes with Marcie
and Michael. Flippant always works for Todd, and it could have
worked for the baby handover as well. But it was a stronger choice
for him to be silenced by the pain he saw in his niece's face.
**MAIL
REPORT**
"Your proposal
for Blair and Tea to get together is brilliant! It would certainly
bring a new dynamic to the Todd-Blair-Tea triangle and I think would
be very believable if written properly. The scenes between Tea and
Blair in the boiler room were wonderfully written and acted -- the
two have very clear chemistry, and I swear at one point I thought
that Tea was going to feel up Blair!" - Tim
Tea totally
felt up Blair's breast during those scenes - but it was probably
accidental. I think Blair/Tea would be so, so good.
"You are so
hard on Rex when Stacy is obviously the problem. Before Stacy, Rex
and Gigi were working. And there's something else that is bugging
me. You have to admit that Cristian and Evangeline was a much better
written love story about two lost souls who finally found true love
with each other. Now that you have warmed up to Cristian don't you
think they should wake up Vangie so they can reunite?" - Lisa
Oh, Lisa - you
are really reaching for the stars, here, LOL. I have to go point by
point with this one.
1) I am being
hard on Rex because Rex is acting like a brain-damaged asshole. JPL
will always be a great actor, but that doesn't mean I have to like
the character he's playing. Rex was great during the Rex/Jen and
Rex/Lindsay days, and I stuck with him during the mostly nauseating
Rex/Adriana relationship. At least with Adriana, Rex was being
fooled by a really good liar. Rex and Gigi were okay at first - I
had nothing against them. They certainly didn't rock my world, but
they were fine. The 1968 storyline made a mockery of their
relationship and pushed Gigi over that precarious edge of "somewhat
annoying" and turned her into a card-carrying member of "really
freakin' annoying." And that's mainly because she turned into an
idiot who believed in time travel and chose to abandon her son in
order to go find Rex in 1968. When she found him, he was
impregnating a hooker - and she got over that in about twenty
seconds. That's when the Rex/Gigi "love story" officially became a
joke - just when TPTB were trying way to hard to make us like
them. Everything backfired. But it got worse with the Brody story
arc. The way Gigi treated Brody made her utterly loathsome. That Rex
fell in love with her even more made him questionable. So things
were a little precarious to begin with when Stacy came upon the
scene. That Rex has fallen for Gigi's absurd break-up routine, taken
the obviously trashy Stacy into his home, believed in all of her
obnoxious lies, and now finds himself wanting to bed her, makes him
a damn idiot. Plain and simple. And I do not like idiots. So no, I
am not being hard on Rex. Rex sucks these days.
2) The only
thing I can admit about Cris and Evangeline as a couple is that I
almost choked on my own vomit during their scenes. They were so
wrong together on every level. The actors were of completely
different styles and caliber. The characters had absolutely nothing
in common, socially, financially, age-wise, or anything else. There
was zero believability that Evangeline would be interested in
Cristian. He was a low life, really, especially during the boxing
crap. Their scenes were forced and painful to watch - often tinged
with outrageous sexism. Cris even pushed Evangeline and yet people
still liked them together. They were very painful to watch for me. Cristian
and Layla are a million times better together, for the following
reasons: David Fumero and Tika Sumpter have real chemistry rather
than the forced chemistry of Fumero and Renee Goldsberry. Cris and
Layla have a lot in common and have a bond over their previous
relationships with Evangeline and others. Their storyline is not
pretentious and thus far has been cleverly put together, whereas
Cris/Vangie was orchestrated in hopes of gaining a fan base to help
the writers justify another round of John/Natalie and
Todd/Blair. And perhaps most importantly, Cris and Layla are hardly
ever on, whereas Cris and Vangie were on almost every day, and
totally overexposed. They were trying to carry really serious story,
whereas Cris and Layla are just a bit of fresh fun on the side. Had
Cris and Evangeline been a side dish like Cris and Layla, maybe I
could have abided them. But they were served as a main dish and for
me, cheese is a topping not a main course.
3) I do not
think Evangeline should wake up, at least not yet. I think if Cris
and Layla became a VERY solid couple, and the writers were willing
to finally run with Todd/Evangeline and there was sufficient
conflict in place between John and Blair and all that, then
Evangeline's return might prove worthwhile. But I don't think this
is the right time.
"You know
Jeremy, normally I am the first one to defend anything to do with
Michael Easton but recently when a fellow reader asked which
characters you'd get rid of and you said, "John McBain," I have to
admit I totally agree with you.... I've been a fan of Michael's for
years. Possibly since I was 14 years old and now I'm 29. So, yeah,
followed him quite a bit. I watched him on Total Recall, followed
him when he arrived on Port Charles and I was interested to see what
OLTL would have in store for my favorite actor. In my opinion
they've screwed up miserably...The writers over at OLTL try to make
John all dark and brooding and it doesn't work...Hell, I hate him at
this point. He always seems pissed off, he's commitment phobic, and
he seems to just have no real soul at all." - Dawn
I think you've
nailed it on the head, Dawn: John McBain seems utterly soulless,
especially when paired with a female love interest. He looks at and
talks to his women like they are pieces of Kleenex and he can't
decide if he needs to blow his nose or not.
"I know this
sounds crazy, but I like Stacy. Stacy's job is to be bitchy and to
make people not like her. When Tina, Blair, and Jen appeared in
Llanview they were not liked either. However, it is a bitch job to
make you love to hate them. Everybody is hating on Stacy, she is
doing her job. I do agree, the storyline is whack... given a better
storyline, Stacy could be the next Erica Kane." - Karen
The next Erica
Kane? How about the next Jen Rappaport - IF we're lucky. And that's
a big "if." When Jen went "bad," we understood where she was coming
from and knew that she still had a soul. She was just selfish and
confused and hurt. She was a bitch, yes - but we love bitches on
soaps. Soaps without bitches would be like Christmas without
presents! The problem isn't that Stacy's a bitch. The problem with
Stacy is that she's an android. She's not human, and she certainly
doesn't have a soul. In a way, she's the female John McBain (maybe
they should pair them together). All of Stacy's actions hinge on her
supposed love for Rex - but anyone who knows what love is can
plainly see that Stacy in fact does NOT love Rex at all. She has
projected some twisted self-image problem onto Rex and thinks that
bedding him and making him want her will somehow fix her, while at
the same time ruining her sister which also gets to the root of
Stacy's mental problems.
However, unlike other great bitch characters in the past who were
nearly evil upon their debuts (Blair, Dorian, Lindsay, heck - even
Lola), Stacy lacks the basic human quality of vulnerability. She
cannot be hurt. Not only does she request men to punch her in the
face, but she continually seeks out situations that can never make
her happy. She is in effect, psychotic - and I do mean that
literally. Stacy can never be redeemed, and TPTB are now
scrambling to figure out a gimmick to change this. They've
written her one-dimensionally, and Crystal Hunt is not the caliber
of actress to do much about that. If a young Kassie DePaivia were
playing Stacy, perhaps she would have made Stacy human. But that is
not the case. That has not happened. Stacy is a cartoon, much like
Carlo Hesser - only far less entertaining. I gave Stacy a chance. I liked that she hated Gigi, because I hate
Gigi. But enough is enough. Stacy and Gigi are equally loathsome. But as much as I hate her, at least Gigi is flesh and blood. Stacy
is plastic and nothing more.
"So what’s the
story with Bree? Jessica had two children with Nash but only Chloe
was mentioned in the whole Bess on the lam story. At one point
didn’t she actually call Chloe Nash’s parents "only grandchild?" You think someone, somewhere would at least mention Bree." -
Kate
They finally
mentioned (and showed) Bree this week, but Kate is right. For
someone who is trying to protect Jessica, Bess sure has neglected
Jessica's only real daughter. But there are so many
inconsistencies
in Jessica's D.I.D. storyline that it would be impossible to
overlook had the culmination of it this week not been so damn
entertaining.
That's it for
this week. Please send your OLTL thoughts, complaints,
